I mean specifically daytime dramas that develop continuous storylines, rather than being organized episodically: series that air only once, five days a week, fifty-two weeks a year, to present a continuing set of plots and subplots. I am not using "soap opera," as do many scholars, as a portmanteau to refer to just any melodramatic serial. As a self-respecting feminist academic, I realize I am supposed to be ashamed to say so, but for reasons I hope this essay will make clear, I am saying so at once.
